 BOSCASTLE FACES THE FINAL SWEEP!

The final proposals for a sewage treatment works in Boscastle, Cornwall have just been submitted to Cornwall County Council for planning consideration and if approved, will make this popular Cornish town one of the final locations on the region’s coast to receive the South West Water ‘Clean Sweep’ treatment!

The planning application is for the construction of the new sewage treatment works at Hillsborough Fields, on land owned by the National Trust. Two new pumping stations will also be provided, one on Penally Hill and the other in the harbour. The new sewage treatment works at Boscastle will provide primary and secondary sewage treatment in line with EU directives and will mean that there will no longer be a raw sewage discharge through the existing outfall.

All plans were originally exhibited at the local Community Centre on the 18th and 19th of November, so that residents could see the proposals in detail and comment accordingly. The application that has just been submitted has taken into consideration any new perspectives that were brought to light during the exhibition. This will include additional levels of odour control and sympathetic site design.

Copies of the application on the scheme are available in the local Post Office and Boscastle Newsagents, so that anyone who is interested can seek all the information available on the scheme and can make comments to Cornwall County Council by the 27th of January.

South West Water would also like assure the people of Boscastle that all plans have been carefully considered for many years and the location for the works has been chosen specifically to make sure the works can practically provide effective sewage treatment for Boscastle, while having minimum impact on the environment, the town and its residents.

South West Water’s £1 billion ‘Clean Sweep’ scheme is the biggest environmental improvement programme of its kind in Europe, with over 40 major multi-million pound schemes already completed and over 220 crude sewage discharges eliminated. This massive clean up programme is now virtually complete, with only a handful of small schemes to be completed.
